Competition can be an immediate cause of failure.  In some cases it will be because the competition is doing a better job on the 5 critical factors.  However, there is a definite statistical component in success.  The smaller the organization the more it is subjected to statistical factors that may not be foreseeable.  Accept it.  It is the way of the world.  However, be skeptical.  There are many occasions when losing to the competition is due to internal factors and not the luck of the competitor.
