There is a very long tradition of analyzing the rise and fall of societies.  There have been many grand theories.  I find some, such as Diamond[xxxx], Tainter[xxxx], and seeds of change author?[xxxx], more interesting than most.  In my business environment and in my local community environment I see many organizations of life times from a few days to many years.  If you count meetings as examples of organizations then on the lower end organizations can end within minutes.  Some, of course, have ended because they fulfilled the intent of creating them.  Many, however, are generally judged to have failed.

Because failure of organizations is so common, some persons have proposed that organizations have a natural life cycle much like an individual member of a species.

I expect a theory of society to provide a quantitative relationship between time of ending, success at meeting wants, and the parameters that affect these outcomes.
