Study what others have done.  Well that sounds rather mundane.  Unfortunately the path to greatness is often full of boring steps.  Learn to enjoy them or forget about the journey.  You need to learn how to study what others have done.  You also need to study what they have done from a certain perspective.  Generally, when you see what others have done you are looking at a finished product.  What you need to study are the components and the steps.  Remember our purpose for studying what others have done is to recombine the components of what they have used in new and different ways.

You need to study broadly and in depth.  The more component ideas you have in your repertoire the greater your opportunity to create a new combination into something remarkable.
